Bernie Kushel, Canteen Manager, Kitchen Steward

Beginning in the early sixties, Bernie ran the kitchen for nearly twenty years. He was very popular with his staff, along with a generation of Shelly's Waiters. By the late seventies, the demanding job of Kitchen Steward wore on Bernie, but he found a second career as the Manager of the Canteen. He would be joined by his wife Ruth in that role, and they would become a known at camp as Tyler Hill Camp's senior couple, well into the 1990s. The Kushels had other members of their family who were at camp for many years. Their son-in-law, Gary Kasten, together with Alan Arbuse, handled the canoe trips on the Delaware for more than twenty years. The Kushel's grandchildren were campers at Tyler Hill Camp for a long time as well.

Bernie and Ruth were a likeable couple who, in addition to flipping a good burger, remained a part of the Tyler Hill Camp culture for more than thirty years.
